The Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) will support not only Vietnam but also many other developing countries in pursuing the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, accelerating the timeline for peaking greenhouse-gas emissions and shifting from fossil fuels to clean energy.

The information was shared by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long during a working session with Ms. Hilde Solbakken, the Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam, on the JETP partner group held on September 18 in Hanoi.

According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long, to effectively implement the JETP program, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has earlier established specialized Working Groups, each assigned with specific tasks, including:

  • Group 1: Offshore wind power development

  • Group 2: Renewable-energy industrial hubs

  • Group 3: Energy storage systems

  • Group 4: Smart grid development

  • Group 5: Training and capacity-building for energy transition

  • Group 6: Transition of coal-fired power plants

  • Group 7: Green hydrogen development

  • Group 8: Consolidation of approved energy projects under Power Development Plan VIII receiving JETP support

He emphasized that the eight working groups have been active and contributed new initiatives to effectively implement Power Development Plan VIII and promote renewable-energy development in Vietnam.

Regarding Norwegian energy projects currently investing in Vietnam, the Deputy Minister noted that projects approved and included in Power Development Plan VIII will be eligible for preferential treatment and support from JETP partners.

During the meeting, the Norwegian Ambassador extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam for the severe impacts caused by Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath.

Ambassador Hilde Solbakken also praised the Ministry of Industry and Trade for its recent efforts and actions in advancing JETP implementation.

NDO – On September 19, Saigon Times (under the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee) organized the “Sustainable Development Forum 2024” with the theme “Accelerating the Net-Zero Economy.” The event is part of the annual Green Economy Forum series hosted by Saigon Times.

The forum attracted more than 200 participants, including representatives from regulatory bodies, policy research institutes, diplomatic missions, and domestic and international enterprises.

Speakers and guests discussed the latest policies and results in Vietnam’s green-transition journey, while also identifying solutions to address bottlenecks and challenges that hinder the country’s progress toward sustainable development.

According to the organizers, beyond climate change, unsustainable development has led to increasingly visible consequences such as natural resource depletion, environmental pollution, economic losses, rising inequality, and social conflicts.

Without swift, coordinated action from all stakeholders, the long-term impacts on future generations will be far more severe. Vietnam is currently making significant efforts to achieve its Net Zero by 2050 commitment.

To pursue this goal, the country is implementing a wide range of measures and policies focused on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and strengthening environmental protection.

These efforts underscore Vietnam’s strong commitment to fighting climate change and realizing its 2050 Net Zero vision.
