On September 18 in Hanoi, the People’s Deputies Newspaper organized a seminar titled “Strengthening the Control of Emission Sources and Solid Waste Management to Improve the Environment.”
The program discussed two main topics: solid waste and the challenge of green urban management; and public–private cooperation to connect resources for effective solid waste treatment.
The Government has set the goal that by 2030, the rate of collection and treatment of municipal solid waste will reach 95% in urban areas, 90% in rural areas, and 98% for hazardous waste.
It is estimated that more than 70,000 tons of waste are generated nationwide each day, but only 15% is collected, recycled, or reused. Waste treatment therefore needs to be approached methodically and efficiently to protect the environment and public health, including promoting waste segregation at the source and encouraging the adoption of recycling technologies.
To achieve this, it is necessary to strengthen socialization and attract investment from the private sector and foreign partners into waste collection, sorting, recycling, reuse, and treatment; strictly manage the process and unlock the potential to turn waste into a resource for sustainable socio-economic development.
