On February 12, the UK Government announced a new incentive program to accelerate offshore wind farm development as part of its ambitious goal to decarbonize the national energy system by 2030.
Under the “Clean Industry Bonus” program, the government will provide an initial grant of £27 million (approximately USD 33.5 million) for every gigawatt (GW) of capacity delivered by offshore wind projects.

The United Kingdom has placed offshore wind at the center of its 2030 clean-energy strategy, targeting an increase in capacity from the current 15 GW to 43–50 GW by the end of this decade. Last year, the UK’s grid operator assessed that achieving 95% clean electricity by 2030 would be highly challenging but still feasible.
The incentive program for offshore wind development was launched to address the challenges the UK may face while pursuing this target. It aims to provide financial support to offshore wind developers while ensuring a commitment to building the necessary transmission infrastructure for these projects.
The UK Government also plans to hold a new round of renewable energy auctions later this year. In this auction, developers will bid for government-backed price-guarantee contracts. Funding from the new incentive program will be allocated to the projects awarded contracts in the upcoming auction.
